George Harvey Flyfishing Expert and Teacher Dies
3 April 2008George Harvey’s name is recognized by all serious flyfishers. He taught thousands pf people including many children not only to flyfish but to enjoy all that fly fishing provides.
George Harvey was a one-time professor at Penn State University. He died last week Monday at the age of 96 at Mount Nittany Medical Center.
George Harvey taught fly-fishing for some 40 years and was affectionatley known as the “Dean of American Fly-fishing,” Harvey is believed to have developed the very first flyfishing course at Penn State University in 1934. He himself graduated at Penn State. and retired in 1972. Joe Humphreys another flyfishing legend took over from George Harvey.
George Harvey is particularly well known and credited for developing a well tried and tested knotted leader formula that allowed excellent fly turnover and dry fly presentation in a flyline leader. Here’s his formula.
