Most flyfishers you see will be casting what is called a wide loop because they allow their rod tip to cover too wide an arc in the back and forward cast.
The sketch below will show the difference between an open loop and a closed loop cast.
The casting style makes a big difference especially when casting in windy conditions (most of the time) and if a long cast is required.
The open loop is characterised by low power being imparted to the line and fly.
To cast a tight loop only allow your casting arm to travel in a small arc as shown in the sketch … this also will mean that your timing for the cast must be better.
At times it may be important to cast an open loop and this is especially true if a weighted fly or a spit shot is used to make a fly sink quickly.
Trying to cast a tight closed loop under these conditions might well result in the fly getting lodged in your shirt or even worse ,your scalp.

How To Remove a Hook Embedded in Skin

There are a couple of ways that are effective out on the river or lakeside.
The first is to cut off the barb and gently work the hook out. This of course assumes that a suitable cutter is available and this is probably not the case. In most cases the barb will be sunk into the skin anyway.
The more useful way is as follows and this depends upon a quick hand and a proper lining up of the hook’s entry point into the skin.
The hook entered the skin in a certain direction … to get it out easily the hook must be forced to come out of the hole it made on entry. That’s why I say the hook must be lined up accurately. Having done this take a length of high breaking strain nylon and double it around the bend of the hook. With the hook lined up give a sudden tug on the fly and out it will come through the hole it made when entering.
You can also wait until you get to the Doctor’s surgery.
Tip: in choosing a reel remember important considerations are weight and drag efficiency. Otherwise a reel is simply there to hold the line … the lighter the rod the lighter the reel should be.
